The event depicted above was participated in by a number of Ypsilanti men, including those who had themselves escpaed from slavery years before. It shows the 55th Massachusetts Infantry, which included at least five Ypsilantians, marching into Charleston, South Carolina while singing “John Brown’s Body” in February, 1865. Days after the liberation of Charleston, many other Ypsilanti men would join the 55th in Charleston when Michigan’s own 102nd USCT arrived along with the 54th Massachusetts, which also included half-dozen Ypsilanti men. Harpers Weekly.
Over seventy black men with Ypsilanti connections fought in the Civil War. The vast majority of men enlisted from Ypsilanti, or listed Ypsilanti as their home, when they joined the 102nd United States Colored Troops, originally the 1st Michigan Colored Regiment. Companies C and F were particularly populated with Ypsilanti men. The list on this page is divided into several groups, including the men who joined the 54th and 55th Massachusetts Infantries. As much information as possible about each soldier is offered. Entries are organized as follows:
Name, Home, Age at enlistment
Military Record
Birth
Census
